Hardware and Performance – unique strengths of the Google Pixel 2
Standing true to its preference for functionality, Google has provided front-facing stereo speakers instead of a minimum-bezel display, a better Bluetooth performance, and IP67-rated dust and water resistance in the Pixel 2. It has the latest 1.9GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB of RAM, a 2,700mAh (3520mAh for the Pixel 2 XL) battery that lasts up to 7 hours on 15 minutes of charging, and 32GB of internal storage. Thanks to Android 8.0 Oreo, the devices offer a smooth and clean performance that’s devoid of bloatware and unnecessary extras.
The Pixel 2 is constructed from aluminum, with a textured and comfortable stone-like finish to offer better grip. It is also better in terms of avoiding smudges and fingerprints. Although the bezel is remarkably large, especially for a premium smartphone, it has been created with functionality in mind. On a similar note, the headphone jack seems to have been removed in order to enable waterproofing. This problem, however, has been addressed by providing a USB-C to 3.5mm port dongle in the box. Google has retained the two-tone rear case with a matte and gloss finish for the Pixel 2. The device is incredibly light, weighing only 143 grams, and comes in three colors—Just Black, Clearly White, and Kinda Blue. The Pixel 2 XL weighs 175 grams and comes in Just Black and Black & White.
Google’s second-generation smartphone has a 5” 1080p AMOLED screen that offers dense colors, deep blacks, and a better contrast ratio. The Pixel 2 XL boasts an even better 6” pOLED display with 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Both devices feature an innovative always-on display that shows the time, date, and any pending notifications on the screen, all the time. They can also recognize any songs playing in the background of the room you’re located in. All of these functions are handled by the device itself, eliminating the need to send and receive tons of data to Google on a regular basis.
Camera – the Google Pixel 2 has arguably the best smartphone camera
There’s a very good reason the Pixel 2 is a top contender for the best smartphone camera—the optical stabilization, wide aperture, and greatly improved processing all contribute to providing images that are incredibly rich in detail. The 12.2MP camera has an f/1.8 aperture that captures vibrant colors. Google’s top-notch software offers a default Auto-HDR+ mode that delivers dynamic range in an image, a superb contrast, and superb landscape shots. It also automatically manages exposure levels to help picture-taking in bright and sunny weather. Low-light photos are similarly exceptional, and are capable of capturing all colors and shadows as well as possible. Both the front and rear cameras have a fantastic portrait mode that blur the background while keeping the subject in sharp focus. The 8MP front camera offers 1080p video recording at 30fps, and the 12.2MP rear camera supports 4K video recording at 30fps.
With the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, Google has managed to introduce a number of exciting upgrades to the original Pixel, with exceptional cameras, a super-responsive fingerprint sensor, and unlimited storage via Google Photos. Coupled with a flagship Qualcomm processor, IP67 water and dust resistant design, Active Edge sensors, it is definitely a device that attracts and deserves attention.
If you love the unparalleled power of Google-enabled technology, you’ll adore the new Pixel 2 and XL 2.
