Flipkart’s Partnership with GreenLine Powers a Greener Supply Chain

The Flipkart Group is taking strides to build a green supply chain and adopt eco-conscious practices in core operations. As part of its sustainability commitment, it became the first e-commerce company to join the Climate Group's clean mobility initiative EV100 in 2020. To make its ambition of transitioning to last-mile electrification of its delivery fleet a reality, it has partnered with GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd, using LNG-powered trucks to reduce its carbon footprint and move towards a more environmentally responsible supply chain.

green supply chain

As India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, Flipkart has been steadily working to build a green supply chain. Navigating this transformation is the core belief that every business function be rethought to do good for the planet and remain responsible to the environment. From reducing carbon emissions and waste disposal to adopting eco-friendly packaging, Flipkart has been weaving sustainability into the core of its operations.

A key milestone in this journey towards building a green supply chain is its ambitious commitment to 100% renewable energy. The Flipkart Group aims to power its warehouses, offices, and data centers entirely with clean energy sources. Alongside this, it is pushing towards a future of 100% electric vehicle (EV) mobility, aiming to transition and adopt electrification of last-mile delivery. This move reflects Flipkart’s efforts to enhance energy efficiency and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Driving Towards Building a Green Supply Chain

Showcasing its commitment to electric mobility, Flipkart became the first Indian e-commerce company to join the Climate Group‘s global electric mobility initiative, EV100. This signifies its dedication to phasing out fuel-powered vehicles and transitioning to a fully-electric fleet by 2030. This phased transition also underscores the company’s efforts towards the decarbonization of its supply chain.

As part of transitioning towards a green supply chain, Flipkart has installed charging infrastructures across 1,400 supply chain premises. It has built an extensive network of partners working as charging providers, aggregators, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to work in related areas.

Powering Towards Sustainable Logistics

To achieve its objective, Flipkart recently collaborated with GreenLine Mobility Solutions Limited, a prominent player in Essar’s Green Mobility Initiative for the decarbonization of its logistics operations. As part of this partnership, GreenLine will deploy its fleet of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks, which will play a pivotal role in reducing the carbon footprint of Flipkart’s delivery network.

“We are proud to embark on this transformative partnership with Flipkart, an organization that shares our commitment to sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of logistics. By deploying our LNG-powered fleet, we are taking a meaningful step towards decarbonizing transportation in India. This collaboration strengthens GreenLine’s mission to deliver cleaner,
more efficient mobility solutions and helps pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future for e-commerce logistics,” says Anand Mimani, CEO, GreenLine Mobility Solutions Limited, on this partnership.

“At Flipkart, we are committed to building a sustainable future, and this partnership with GreenLine is a milestone in achieving that goal,” adds Hemant Badri, Senior Vice President; Head of Supply Chain, Customer Experience Commerce Business at Flipkart Group.

A Synergy of Efficiency and Sustainability

In the first phase of the collaboration, GreenLine will deploy 25 LNG trucks. Each of these vehicles will come with 46-foot containers that offer a capacity of 110 cubic meters (CBM). These trucks will transport a wide variety of goods, including both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) shipments, across crucial regional routes. The initial phase will focus on transporting goods from the West to the North of India, with plans to expand to North-South and West-South corridors soon.

This partnership will serve as an essential component of Flipkart’s broader sustainability strategy, complementing its growing electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The integration of LNG-trucks into its operations alongside EVs helps reduce emissions and build a green supply chain with efficiency.

“By integrating LNG-powered vehicles into our logistics operations alongside our existing electric vehicle fleet, we aim to improve supply chain efficiency and contribute to India’s broader environmental objectives. This collaboration highlights our continuous efforts to drive green innovation and support the long-term sustainability of our operations,” explains Hemant.

As Flipkart continues to adopt sustainable practices as part of its core strategies, this partnership with GreenLine marks a significant step towards a greener future. By embracing these eco-conscious strategies, it is not only reducing its environmental impact but also setting a new standard for sustainable logistics. These commitments to a cleaner and more efficient supply chain align with India’s broader sustainability goals and demonstrate the potential for significant positive change.
