OTPs are secret codes that safeguard our precious data. By educating ourselves on OTP care, we can protect ourselves from online theft, fraud, and loss of sensitive information.

Most sensitive information is now digitized, and you need OTPs for nearly all digital transactions. OTPs are sensitive single-use authorization codes. This means handling these codes with extreme care is a necessary step. OTPs are central to two-factor authentication (2FA), which helps protect your private information.

Best OTP Hygiene Practices

  • No financial institution or e-commerce platform asks you to read out OTP; if they do, hang up immediately
  • When booking a product or service through a call, enter the OTP using your keypad and never dictate it
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links, as they may attempt device takeover and access private information
  • Do not forward texts or messages containing an OTP to anyone
  • Verify and double-check the amount that will be debited before entering an OTP
  • Check the merchant’s name and any other information in the OTP message
  • Cancel the transaction if there are any mismatches
