Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, engineering graduates from Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi and later colleagues in Bengaluru, put their heads together to found an online bookstore called Flipkart. Despite the common surname and the fact that they hail from the same town, Chandigarh, neither Sachin nor Binny are related. In fact, they have met only in 2005, during their final-year project at IIT.

The Flipkart website is launched

Flipkart sells its first book, John Wood’s Leaving Microsoft to Change the World. The first customer is VVK Chandra, a curious young web developer from Mahbubnagar, Andhra Pradesh. He becomes part of a sale that would make Indian e-commerce history.
