The smallest terrace or balcony often makes a good spot for a garden in a crowded city. There is no such thing as a garden being too small. After all, a balcony garden can be as complicated or simple as you want. If you only have space for one pot, that’s a garden. If you’ve got room for a whole bunch of plant containers, then that’s even better! So, if you’ve a tiny outdoor space that’s a potential refuge from the pollution and noise of the city, all you need is a bit of guidance and the right kind of tools and seeds to create that picture-perfect balcony garden you’ve always wanted.
Our in-house green thumb experts have put together a list of essentials for 4 different types of balcony gardens. Read on!

1. For a balcony garden on your railing

Does a wrought iron or aluminum railing confine your balcony into a really small space? Don’t let that deter you from growing plants over the railing or letting flowers or ferns have their moment in the spotlight! Put your balcony railing to use by fixing it with flower boxes or containers filled with creepers that spill over the sides and spread cheer.

What you need:

a. Good sized, sturdy containers

Plant containers that are too small will make your balcony railing look cluttered. So buy planters that will allow plants to grow to a large enough size to create an interesting effect and won’t be knocked away by the wind or rain.
These planters slip right over balcony railings without tools or fasteners. (Hover over the products shown in the graphic for more information.)

b. Great soil

Give your plants a good foundation by buying soil and manure that’s particularly suited to them, and you’ll be rewarded with healthy foliage and blooms! Look for something like this organic potting mix that contains vermi-compost, organic neem and aged cow manure.

c. The right plants

Ensure that you are buying and growing outdoor plants or flowers that are suited for the weather in your city. We recommend this kit of 5 summer flowers or this packet of yellow Zantedeschia bulbs.

2. For a balcony garden where you grow healthy edibles

An edible garden is a balcony garden featuring almost any of the vegetable plants you can think of growing in a backyard garden. These can all grow in containers that offer good drainage, be it clay pots or plastic ones. Herbs are the easiest edibles to grow in containers and can be used to flavor up your meals and cocktails!

Balcony Garden Essentials - Edible Garden

What you need:

a. Containers

Plant herbs and vegetables in a tray container (that gives you more sowing area) or in small containers crafted from metal or ceramic for an indoor garden.

b. The right seeds

Get seeds. Almost any vegetable plant will thrive in your balcony vegetable garden under the right conditions, including tomatoes, eggplant and radish. Right from thyme, basil and oregano, all herbs can grow in tiny spaces.

c. Watering system

Plants need water to thrive, so don’t forget to water them once a day. Set up the right watering system and equipment. Check out this watering can and this drip irrigation kit and create a seamless system of watering your edible plants.

 3. For a vertical wall garden

A vertical garden is ideal if you have limited horizontal space or want to cover an unattractive wall. Here, plants are hung from hooks attached to a vertical frame on the wall or placed on vertically stacked shelves.

What you need:

a. Containers

Window boxes and planters that can be hung such as this bamboo and wrought iron one or this one with a hook or this bracket planter.

b. Plants

Choose plants that you can leave outside all year long. Think about how vigorous the plant you grow will be—will it be easy to reach the top of the structure if you need to prune your plants? Some plants may block sunlight from reaching plants below them, so do your research before you stack them up.

c. Furniture

A simple rust=proof bookshelf can also serve as a vertical plant stand. Make your balcony a great spot for a morning cuppa or a board game by adding in some synthetic fiber furniture, which won’t be damaged by sunlight or rain.

4. For a hanging garden

One of the classic balcony gardens is a hanging garden that features pots hung from the ceiling. You can choose plants that have creepers trailing down over the edge of the balcony railing or hang them from different heights to experience a curtain of green.

What you need:

a. Containers

A few hanging planters with holes cut in the bottom is all you need; you may also drill holes in the base of the planters. Terracotta and clay materials will lose moisture more quickly, but metal, plastic and ceramic containers will lock water in.

 b. The right nutrition

Plants that are not cultivated in the ground and are exposed to more sun and wind require water more often and are vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. Add extra mulch to retain moisture in the soil, keep it cool and help improve its fertility.

c. Watering wands

A watering wand attached to a hose helps to water those difficult-to-reach baskets, but a watering can with a longer spout will work too.

Tools to spruce up your balcony garden

The secret to growing that lush balcony garden lies with using the right hand tools, so roll up your sleeves and dig in as we round them up:
